Mother's Day Workshops Near Richmond, Burnaby & Surrey: Where to Celebrate Creatively

If you live in Richmond, Burnaby, or Surrey and you're looking for a creative Mother's Day workshop without driving downtown, here's the local guide. Qingscake's jelly cake decorating workshop is centrally located in Richmond — minutes from each of these cities — and has become the go-to Mother's Day class for Metro Vancouver families who want hands-on, memorable, and accessible.

Why location matters on Mother's Day

Mother's Day weekend (May 9–10, 2026) is one of the busiest traffic days in Metro Vancouver. Downtown Vancouver gets congested, parking is brutal, and bridge crossings stack up. A creative workshop in Richmond offers the best of both worlds: easy access from all surrounding cities, ample parking, and a peaceful, away-from-the-crowds atmosphere.

From Richmond

  • Drive time to Qingscake studio: 5–15 minutes from anywhere in Richmond
  • Transit: Canada Line stations (Aberdeen, Lansdowne, Brighouse) within easy reach
  • Parking: Free on-site parking
  • Why locals love it: It's the "hidden gem in your own city" — many Richmond residents discover Qingscake through a Mother's Day or birthday booking and become repeat students.

See our Richmond workshop page for full local details.

From Burnaby

  • Drive time: 20–30 minutes via Knight Street Bridge or Highway 91
  • Transit: SkyTrain Expo Line → Canada Line transfer at Waterfront → Aberdeen Station (~45 min)
  • Best route on Mother's Day: Leave by 9:30am to avoid bridge backup
  • Why Burnaby moms love it: A creative day-trip with a cake to bring home, no need to drive into downtown Vancouver chaos.

See our Burnaby workshop page for transport tips.

From Surrey

  • Drive time: 30–45 minutes via Highway 91 / Alex Fraser Bridge
  • Transit: SkyTrain to King George → bus to Bridgeport → Canada Line south (~60 min)
  • Best route on Mother's Day: Highway 91 is faster than Highway 99 on weekends
  • Why Surrey families love it: The most popular creative workshop within easy reach — especially for families with kids who want a "real" outing without 90+ minutes of driving.

See our Surrey workshop page for the full local breakdown.

Group bookings & family-friendly seating

Mother's Day is one of our biggest group-booking weekends. We welcome:

  • Mother–daughter pairs at adjacent stations
  • Three-generation tables (grandma, mom, kids 8+)
  • Sister groups and friend groups celebrating each other's moms
  • Corporate gift bookings (some Vancouver employers gift workshops to employees with new moms)

Groups of 4+ receive priority seat assignment so you can stay together.

Early-bird promotion (Mother's Day 2026)

Bookings made before April 30, 2026 lock in regular workshop pricing of CAD $138–$188 per person. Mother's Day weekend seats are limited and have historically sold out by early May. Reserve early.

Accessibility

  • Ground-floor studio, wheelchair accessible
  • Seated workshop format (no standing for 2+ hours)
  • Vegetarian-friendly recipe (we can adjust ingredients on request)
  • Bilingual instruction: English and Mandarin

What is a Jelly Cake?

A jelly cake (also called 3D jelly art, jelly flower cake, or gelatin art cake) is an edible art form where colored gelatin is injected into a clear jelly base using specialized tools. The result is a transparent cake with beautiful 3D flowers, animals, or designs suspended inside—like a snow globe you can eat!

Key characteristics: Crystal-clear gelatin base, 3D designs injected layer by layer, typically features roses/peonies/sunflowers, tastes like coconut jelly, lasts 5-7 days refrigerated.

Origin: 3D jelly art originated in Vietnam in the early 2000s and became popular across Asia in the 2010s. It's now practiced worldwide as both a culinary art and creative hobby.
